What If Women Thought About Sex Like Men? | Carolyn Edgar

The good folks over at Colorlines made my week by posting this video of ?Sh*t Steve Harvey Says? ? which is not a parody of things Steve Harvey would say, but clips of things Steve Harvey has actually said. If Steve Harvey didn?t actually exist, we?d have to invent him. In these clips, Harvey plays the ?Steve Harvey? persona for maximum entertainment, or revulsion, depending on how you feel about him. I?m not mad. I?m amused.

The romantic comedy ?Think Like a Man? ? inspired by Harvey?s popular relationship self-help book, ?Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man? ? has returned some of the book?s more controversial advice for women to the spotlight, particularly something Harvey calls the 90-day rule. Harvey advises women to withhold sex for the first 90 days of a relationship, to determine if the man is true relationship material. Harvey compares the 90-day no-sex rule to the way that auto companies like Ford Motor Company used to withhold employee benefits for the first 90 days of employment, a probationary period to determine whether or not the person is ?worth? the additional investment.

I can?t argue with the notion that one should get to know a person before having sex with them. Whether the waiting period is three hours, three days, three weeks or three months is a matter of personal choice. But I cannot subscribe to the notion of sex as a prize that men earn by meeting various challenges and tests of endurance, sort of like ?The Amazing Race.?

Still, I?ve been thinking quite a bit recently about what it means to ?think like a man? ? and what would happen if women did, especially when it comes to sex.

Almost from their sons? birth, mothers and fathers joke about how their sons start playing with their penises as soon as they figure out what their hands are for. For boys, masturbation is normal and expected.

This ?boys will be boys? attitude extends through toddlerhood into adolescence and beyond. Once a boy gets past the ?girls are icky? stage of early adolescence and moves into puberty, he is expected to be in constant preparation for his first sexual encounter. The goal is not to stop him from having sex ? that?s generally considered inevitable ? but to teach him how to do it safely and responsibly.

By contrast, it?s rare for a mother to talk openly about her infant daughter touching herself. Once a girl gets past the ?boys are icky? stage of early adolescence and moves into puberty, she is immediately taught to fear sex and sexuality. ?Boys are only out for one thing,? we tell them. They get that message from media and culture, even if we parents never say those words. The biggest fear of the parents of a teenage girl is that she is out somewhere having sex. (As the mom of a teen girl, I speak for myself here.) Yet at the same time, girls are bombarded with hypersexualized images of girls and women. In music, the ugliest rappers brag about taking a model chick (or two), ?beating it up? and sending her tripping back home on her Louboutins. The flip side of ?boys are only after one thing? is, ?that one thing is all you have to offer.?

What if we taught girls that it is natural for them to have sex drives, natural for them to have thoughts and desires, and natural for them to want to make themselves feel good? What if we taught girls that their sexuality exists for their own pleasure and enjoyment, not simply for the pleasure of men? What if we taught our girls the same way we teach our boys about sex ? wait as long as you can, but when you choose to do it, please be safe and responsible?

After adolescent boys and girls become men and women, there?s still a vast difference between what women and men are taught about sex. Men are expected to go out and explore. They?re expected to have multiple sex partners ? one or more at a time ? until they find ?the one? and are ready to settle down. Men are supposed to have a decent amount of experience before they choose ?the one,? so they will know both what they do and don?t like, and what it takes to satisfy a woman?s needs.

Of course, when a woman has attachment-free sex, she?s labeled a slut. Women convince themselves they can only have sex inside of ?relationships,? so some of us say we?re in a relationship with every dude we?re having sex with. It?s now acceptable for women to have some past experience, but too much puts a woman in permanent ho class.

But while men receive a two-fold benefit from experience, the value of a sexually experienced woman lies in her ability to please a man, not in knowing how she wants to be pleasured. Women are encouraged to teach themselves how to orgasm by masturbating. This is a start, but since penises don?t work like fingers and they don?t vibrate, self-pleasuring only goes so far in helping a woman improve her own responsiveness during intercourse. Perhaps women should be taught like men to focus on and take charge of their own pleasure during sex.

So I?m just saying: think like a man? Unfortunately, when it comes to sex, it seems no one really wants women to do that.

The indictment against Ratko Mladic ? who went on trial Wednesday at the U.N. war crimes tribunal in the Hague, Netherlands ? holds the former Bosnian Serb army commander “individually criminally responsible for planning, instigating, ordering and/or aiding and abetting the crimes charged in this indictment.” Mladic is charged with 11 counts of genocide, crimes against humanity and violations of the laws and customs of war. The counts below detail the atrocities during the 1992-1995 Bosnian war that Mladic is accused of commanding.

COUNT 1: GENOCIDE

Ratko Mladic, along with other former Serbian and Bosnian Serb leaders is accused of “destroying” entire groups of Muslim and Croat communities in various parts of Bosnia. These include the 3-year relentless shelling of the capital, Sarajevo, and several other small towns such as Foca, where Serbs were particularly brutal, executing local Muslims and throwing them into a river. Some of the remains were only found last year.

COUNT 2: GENOCIDE

This count of genocide refers to the mass killing of over 7,000 men and boys in Srebrenica, in July 1995, which is Europe’s worst bloodshed since World War II. Mladic’s troops executed almost the entire Srebrenica male population in a few days, burying them later in mass graves around the town. Many were later found with their hands tied behind their back and identification of the remains is still ongoing.

COUNT 3: PERSECUTIONS

The count relates to the persecution on political and religious grounds against Bosnia’s Muslims and Croats in the Serb-controlled towns like Banja Luka, in western Bosnia, or Bijeljina in the east. Non-Serbs in these and other towns were evicted from their homes by Serb troops, held in prison camps, tortured, raped and killed. Images or skinny, naked prisoners from the camps in western Bosnia in 1992-93 reminded the world of the Nazi-era camps.

COUNTS 4, 5 and 6: EXTERMINATION, MURDER

These counts of the indictment refer to the widespread killings of non-Serbs that took place in the territories under the Bosnian Serb control, but also on the brutal attacks on the capital, Sarajevo, which prosecutors say were designed to “spread terror.” Mladic’s troops from 1992-95 were constantly sniping and shelling Sarajevo, killing thousands of civilians, the longest siege of a capital city since WWII.

COUNTS 7 AND 8: DEPORTATION, INHUMANE ACTS

Mladic’s troops also used forced deportation and various inhumane acts, such as sexual violence, killing, and destruction of houses and cultural monuments and sacred sites, to rid the Serb-controller territories of non-Serbs. This was started in 1992 in what became known as ethnic cleansing. Entire communities were forcefully displaced and the U.N. Security Council set up so-called safe havens in 1993 to protect those communities from Serb troops. Those included Srebrenica, Zepa , Gorazde and Sarajevo.

COUNTS 9 AND 10: TERROR, UNLAWFUL ATTACKS

The main focus of this count is on the siege of Sarajevo and the campaign of sniping and shelling to spread terror among the civilian population. Mladic’s forces sniped and shelled civilians as they conducted every day civilian activities. People were injured and killed inside their homes. The lack of gas, electricity or running water forced people to leave their homes, where they were targeted. People were also targeted while queuing for water or in the markets. Two mortar attacks on the Markale markets killed more than one hundred people and wounded more than 200.

COUNT 11: TAKING OF HOSTAGES

This separate count refers to the events in 1995, when Mladic’s troops took hostage U.N. peacekeepers in Bosnia to force NATO to prevent attacks on Bosnian Serb positions around Sarajevo. Between approximately 26 May 1995 and 19 June 1995, Bosnian Serb forces detained over 200 U.N. peacekeepers and military observers in various locations, sending out images of peacekeepers tied to antennas or radars in a warning to NATO. Some of the detainees were assaulted or otherwise maltreated during their captivity. They were released in several stages after an intervention from then-Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic.

HBT: Struggling Angels fire hitting coach

From beat writer?Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com comes word that the Angels fired longtime hitting coach Mickey Hatcher late Tuesday night.

Triple-A Salt Lake hitting instructor Jim Eppard has been promoted to serve as Hatcher?s replacement.

The news comes with odd timing considering the Halos beat the A?s 4-0?on Tuesday in Anaheim, but this decision runs much deeper than one game.

The Angels have probably been the biggest disappointment of the 2012 baseball season?s first half and currently trail the American League West-leading Rangers by a whopping seven games. The offense has been shut out eight times already and ranked 23rd in the majors in runs scored heading into Tuesday?s game. Someone had to be the scapegoat.

It?s worth remembering that Hatcher had a small clash of?philosophies?with Albert Pujols back in late April, and that Hatcher is a nearly-lifelong friend of Angels manager Mike Scioscia. Maybe this is standard protocol in Anaheim, but GM Jerry Dipoto made Tuesday?s?announcement. Scioscia was not present.

AJAC Brighton to London Eco-Run – Day 3

HAMILTON, ON ? Day three of AJAC’s Brighton to London Eco-Run began in the hallowed, ivy-covered halls of McMaster University with a compelling speech by Dr. Ali Emadi ? the world’s foremost expert on hybrid and electric powertrain technology.

Over the last hundred years, he said, the IT industry, which basically started with Bell Telephone, has gone through multiple paradigm shifts, and yet, the transportation industry is fundamentally the same. The main problems are energy sources that are unsustainable, unreliable and unefficient. Dr. Emadi suggested that one solution could be a smart grid power storage ? a sort of internet for energy.

The previous day we’d stopped at Evergreen Brickworks in Toronto, a green oasis only 15 minutes from downtown. While the electric cars had a chance to replenish their stores using the facility’s own charging stations, we were given a tour of the historic 40-acre site that “helped build the skyline of Toronto”.

The century-old brickworks produced up to 40 million bricks a year until its 1983 closure. Purchased by a developer, it very nearly became home to almost 800 condos, until being declared historically significant, and expropriated by the city. Now, thousands of urban kids, some without backyards, visit the site ? and through hands-on agricultural and ecological experience ? learn to care about the environment and our impact upon it.

We receive a rousing welcome in Woodstock, where they’d closed off a side street to host a press conference with charging stations for our EVs. Woodstock’s mayor was particularly gratified to see the three participating Toyota vehicles, given Toyota’s importance as one of their major employers.

Over 75.8 km of some of the prettiest rural roads imaginable, I’d managed to achieve 5.5L/100km in a five-speed Fiat. There were many stops in the small villages we passed through, each of which took its toll on fuel economy.

For the final leg, I was assigned the Mazda3 SKYACTIV. Curiously, given that the primary feature of the Mazda’s new powertrain suite is fuel efficiency ? there was no fuel computer.

Finally, we arrived at our final destination of Fanshawe College’s Centre for Applied Transportation Technologies in London, where we were waved by checkered flag into a vast automotive hall. We were greeted by a large crowd of students, faculty members and local politicians ? who praised the event and the awareness it brought to the importance of driver education and the impact our habits have on fuel economy.

For the duration of the run, we were accompanied by Yves Madore of Natural Resources Canada (NRCan). At the closing ceremony, he said that while 70% of the participants managed to meet the Energuide ratings on the first day, by the end of the run, every single vehicle had met or exceeded those ratings.

Each leg presented a different challenge: rain, rush-hour traffic, hills ? all of which deeply affected fuel consumption. In a comparison test NRCan had conducted between identical vehicles on identical routes, the driver who followed the conservative driving tips saved 25% more fuel over the one who just followed traffic.

We came away with an appreciation of the driver’s responsibility in working with technology to save fuel.

Judging from the positive reception in the various communities visited, the Eco-Run, a brand-new venture for AJAC, was a success ? suggesting that similar events may be held in other locations across Canada.

Ask Forgiveness, Not Permission: Why Dish ?Ad-Skipping? Tech Irks TV Execs

skipping1When Dish announced their new ad-skipping tech, response was fairly muted. Sure it was some cool technology – the experience is seamless in that you notice maybe the first second of a commercial and then a little notification pops you over the commercials entirely – but TV execs are reportedly upset by Dish’s unilateral decision. Fox’s Peter Rice said it was “a strange thing to do” and NBC is still evaluating it. However, what is really interesting is that Dish decided to go ahead with the service at all.

Lady Gaga Cancels Show In Indonesia After Protests

Islamic hard-liners worry that sexy clothes and dancing will corrupt youth.
By Gil Kaufman

Lady Gaga lives to provoke and push the envelope. But not everyone is up for her antics. The “Americano” singer has been forced to cancel her sold-out June 3 “Born This Way Ball” show at the 52,000-seat Gelora Bung Karno stadium in Jakarta, Indonesia after Islamic hard-liners and conservative lawmakers said her sexy costumes, suggestive dance moves and “vulgar” style could corrupt the nation’s youth.

According to the Associated Press, a spokesperson for the national police said on Tuesday (May 15) that the permit for the show has been denied after religious conservatives worried that the concert could undermine the nation’s moral fiber. Some of the critics actually threatened to use physical force to prevent Gaga from getting off her plane. Though Indonesia is a secular state, it has the world’s largest population of Muslims and a small extremist fringe of religious leaders has been more vocal in recent years.

“She’s a vulgar singer who wears only panties and a bra when she sings and she stated she is the envoy of the devil’s child and that she will spread satanic teaching,” said Salim Alatas, the Jakarta head of hardline Islamic Defender Front (FPI), according to Reuters. “This is dangerous.”

Local police worried that they might not be able to guarantee security at the show and suggested to national police that the permit for what was to be Gaga’s biggest gig on her current Asian tour be pulled. Every seat at the Karno stadium had been sold, with half of them going in the first two hours.

The AP reported that permits for shows are typically issued three weeks before concerts in Jakarta, so it is not uncommon for tickets to be sold well ahead of receiving a final permit. Gaga’s Asian tour started last month and the Indonesian flap is not the first bump she’s faced along the road. Gigs in South Korea
were 18-and-over because conservatives in that country also raised objections over the concert’s content.
